Anxiety is becoming a problem that many people have to face on a daily basis. This can be torture as anxiety can take over your body and leaving you a wreck trying to get back the normality that you once knew. The first thing that you need to remember when dealing with anxiety is that you are not alone and that there are ways to help you tackle the beast that is anxiety.
Anxiety can take hold of you in the most inappropriate places; the shops; a meeting with your child’s school teacher, at work.
Some of the options that are available to those of us who suffer from panic attacks range from, expensive therapies to severe medication. If you have either tried these and with no success, or are inclined to find another way, here are my top tips for dealing with anxiety.
Try to put it into perspective. Many of us who suffer from panic attacks worry about our health and what these attacks are doing to our bodies. Although these panic attacks are doing us no favours, neither are they life threatening. Worrying about your health will only make these attacks worse and bring on more – just the thing that we are trying to avoid.
Keep a diary of when you attack happen. By doing this you should be able to identify when and what triggers them. For some people it can be the daily commute to work, others having to do the weekly shop. Once you identify what starts them, you can try to limit your exposure to these situations. Although it doesn’t solve the problem – it puts you back in control.
Breathe! I know this sounds obvious, but your breathing can help reduce the strength of the panic attack and even prevent it altogether. Our breathing changes when we are in different situations. When we are stressed or panicked, our breathing comes in shallow, fast breaths. By taking deep breaths and slowing it down, you can give yourself the control over your attack. This can be difficult to do and may need practice, but once you have the hang of it, it can really help get you out of that one way corridor which leads to anxiety.
Dealing with anxiety can be a lonely process as although most people have heard of it, not all people have experienced it or have recognised that what they are feeling is indeed anxiety. Talking about your experiences with those around you can help prevent ignorance and may actually relieve your anxiety to a certain degree.
Dealing with your anxiety may take on many forms, but perseverance will enable you to find which method works best for you and how you can not only work out what causes you your anxiety, but also how to deal with your anxiety effectively.
